Fool Burglars Into Thinking You’re Home

Don’t let your home be an easy target. Fool potential burglars with these home safety hacks that make it look like someone is home.

Put your lights on a timer.

Inside and outside lights sometimes have a timer feature. While you’re away, set the lights to turn on in the evening. This way your home will remain lit during the late hours of the night rather than being a dark and easy target.

Look into lawn maintenance.

If you’re planning on being away for some time, it can be a good idea to look into lawn and yard maintenance. If your yard looks as if someone hasn’t tended to it for weeks, criminals can assume no one is home.

Have someone check your mail.

Just like the yard, a pile of mail can let potential burglars know you’re not home. Avoid a pile of newspapers or an overflowing mailbox by having someone come by and collect your mail during your trip.

Leave on the TV or radio.

If you’ll only be gone for a day or so, it can be a good idea to leave on the television. You could also leave a device playing music. Be sure not to leave the volume too loud.

Keep blinds and window coverings closed.

Check any window coverings and be sure they are closed. If someone were to check the house from outside, you want to make sure they can’t see into your home through the windows. Even if you normally do not cover windows, it may be a good idea to do so when you leave town.

Have a car in the driveway.

Rather than parking a car in the garage while you’re away, leave it in the driveway. A car in the driveway is usually an indication someone is home, and could deter a potential burglar.

While these home safety hacks may deter potential burglars, they are not a sustainable method of home security. The best way to protect your home from fire, break-in and burglary while you’re away is with a professionally installed security system.
